Emerald Interiors was hired to fit out and refurbish the new central London site of Massimo de Carlo’s new art gallery in Mayfair. We had carried out the dilapidations work for the international art dealer’s previous gallery nearby. The gallery space is located at 16 Clifford Street, at the heart of London’s Mayfair district.

On the first floor of a graceful, five-floor Grade II Listed building built in 1723, the gallery’s new exhibition space retains largely intact, original interior features. While maintaining the site’s heritage with finely crafted details, the gallery combines natural materials and the latest technology to create a stylish gallery with all the needs of a modern business.

Designed by London-based PiM Studio Architects, the space aspires to offer a different exhibition style for the contemporary art sector. Unlike the often ‘white cube’ nature of most art galleries, Massimo de Carlo prefers a space with history and interesting architecture.

Fit out and refurbishment to the highest standards

Emerald Interiors’ skilled joiners created three storerooms with customised storage cupboards and bespoke doors as part of this refurbishment. The MDF doors were built, and spray finished by us in our own workshops.

We also carried out extensive decoration work, which entailed painting the gallery walls and high ceiling in a white emulsion. This was a time-sensitive operation which needed to be undertaken between art shows.

Our lighting team was also called in to install the exquisite handcrafted 30-lamp chandeliers, which add drama and elegance to the gallery rooms. Finally, we installed an attractive tea point kitchen. A tea point is a space for people to breakaway and enjoy a hot beverage.

The reconfiguration and refurbishment of this prestigious art gallery store required exceptionally high standards of workmanship in this listed building. Works were carefully planned, sequenced, and segregated, and regular communications throughout the project.
